Dentistry

Dental care for our pets has gained lots of attention in the past two decades. Just as in people, the health of a dog or cat's mouth can have a significant effect on their general health (not to mention their breath!). While certain foods and dental chewies or treats can help to slow the formation of plaque and tartar on pets' teeth, nothing is better than regular brushing with pet-specific toothpaste and having the teeth professionally cleaned periodically. During your pet's physical exam the doctor can determine when such a cleaning is needed.

At ACAH we use a combination of hand scaling and the modern and gentle ultrasonic scaling to clean our patient's teeth. This is followed by careful polishing and evaluation of the health of each tooth. Fluoride treatment is also available. If a tooth is badly diseased, we may recommend extraction, or in some cases, referral to a dental specialist for root canal or other treatment.
